Inception and Inspiration - YOUTH PARLIAMENT

Youth Parliament concept has been historically enhanced by two exceptional societal sources. The biggest impetus for this initiative was the first and last parliamentary elections held in undivided Pakistan on 7 December 1970. Demands for the democratic, economic and social emancipation of the people of Bangladesh, the father of the nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman won an absolute majority as Prime Minister. But Yahya Khan and Bhutto of Pakistan’s ruling group hesitated to hand over power to him. As a result, the momentous of March 7 address laid the foundation for Bangladesh’s independence. That is, from the beginning, the reflection of the people of Bangladesh towards democracy and parliament can be seen. During the liberation war, young individuals actively participated for Bangladesh’s freedom.

Holey Artisan Bakery terror attack in 2016

On July 1, 2016, militants attacked the Holy Artisan restaurant in Dhaka. 22 people including 2 police officers and 17 foreign nationals were killed by them. But the worrying thing is that all the 5 militants involved in the killing were young. Despite the terrorists permitting hostage Faraaz Hossain to leave, but his loyalty in safeguards of friends drove to remain with them. The next morning in the ‘Operation Thunderbolt’ conducted by army para commandos, 5 young terrorists were killed. As the youth went astray, another youth gave his life to save his friends. We can see this phenomenon as two sides of the same coin, youths are as suicidal as they are humanitarian, faithful too.

The contrast between the facts underscores the importance of youth engagement on society. The steadfast determination of youngsters in the liberation war of 1971 and their constant fight for independence laid the way for change. These young individuals have shown a deep commitment to upholding values of social harmony and secularism. The unfortunate deviation witnessed in the Holy Artisan incident, where young individuals were involved in heinous acts, highlights the vulnerability of youth to negative influences. This divergence from the ideals of the liberation war can be attributed to the absence of comprehensive systematic civic learning and the potential sway of external forces. Consequently, the militants (youth) involved themselves into activities such as militancy, substance abuse, and social crimes[1]. A part of demographic dividend youth must take on the vital role of bridging nations and societies. As a result, the Youths and Ideological aspect took precedence as the primary drive for the notion of Youth Parliament.
